Stamped Concrete

Do you install stamped concrete?

If so, what measures do you take to prevent the pavement from cracking?

We just installed a large patio where we had to tear out an existing stamped concrete patio. The guy who installed it did a real poor job. No expansion joints (ugly), concrete only 3" thick in some spots. no base to speak of. I have seen some SC jobs that look decent, but the expansion joint really throws it off for me.
