All right, here's something we don't want to see on the first day of excavation. We have performed five of these in the past four years. It's never something we want to do, but one of those things we can't walk away from feeling good unless we do.

Luckily, it was just the spot you see in the pics.

The same back fill is used along the entire overdig area.... ie its dug out, footers, brick, plumbing, waterprooofing, backfilled ......why only dig where the steps are....logic tells you that the entire overdig area would be an issue would it not?

Guessing that is your house?

Kootoo, did you ever see the soil along a foundation settle in one area? According to your logic, it should settle evenly around the entire foundation.

The area on which we performed the overdig was soft and pumping, so we remvoved that soil.

Every square inch of the overdig area around the entire house is succeptible to settling. Like it or not Its all backfill.

Succeptible.....yes! Guaranteed.........No! There are soooo many factors that go into recognizing the likelihood of overdig settlement. Where is there the most shade/sunlight? Different types of backfill? Positive grading aroung the house? Length of time the backfill has been in, Was there a preexisting pad or structure there that prohibited proper natural compaction? My guess is that there was a pad or patio there prior to this project that did not allow the natural settling brought on by Mother Nature.

Kootoo, you are correct. That house was built seven years ago. Do you think some of the areas could have settled into place and become suitable for supporting pavement?

Looks to me like there was probably a set of concrete steps there which didn't allow much water underneath.

Mbella, how do you like the 35D?
