Hey guys. I don't know that much about all this, but my web developer says that it helps in getting your site ranked better if done correctly. If anyone is interested in linking sites with me, email me at sales@SCgreenscapes.com and i will forward it to my developer and he will contact you if he is interested. He will probally want to see your site, so put a link to it in your email with all your contact info.
Andrew: if i am on the right track here, let me know.
Thanks,
John

yes, you are right on track.
But....this will look EXTREMELY tacky.
Your website is your menu. A website should be geared with one intent and one intent only. YOUR PROSPECTIVE CLIENTS!! They don't wanna see a page full of links to contractors across the country! I don't even put any manufacturer links on my site, because i wanna keep it clean.
Ok, here is my advice. Linking sites is a great way to enhance SEO. So maybe make a LOCAL network page.
Example: I know of a very good company that does high end basement finishing. And I know another company that does high quality driveway paving. So maybe I would make a page where I can have links to QUALITY home improvement contractors that are IN my service area, and that are not my competition. This way it may be of value to a prospective client whom wants their basement finished as well. And in exchange the other contractors make a similar page and place my link on their sites.
Also.......If you notice, from time to time I place my link on the message boards of which I participate. I do this not to show you guys my site, as most probably think. But the search spiders pick it up when they crawl these sites. And this counts as a link!

i heard my guy mention that also about dropping your address on message boards. I don't know how he was going to set up the links. it would be nice if you could link with in the site and not show a button for it. that way the search engine would catch it, but your customer would not. then you could link away and not take away from your site.
