Pretty Neat.
Click on the link to see the retractable awnings and more pictures from different angles.
They are made of the same stuff that sails for boats are made of.
They retract with heavy winds, so they don't get torn up.
The awnings on this pergola block 50% of the light, but they are also available to block 100%. And they come in an array of colors.
This awning kit has aluminum beams, coated with vinyl. And the columns are vinyl.
Very good quality kit.
This particular pergola kit cost $10,900.00. Plus I charged an additional 3 grand to erect it. We had to supply 4x4 posts, and concrete for the posts. EVERYTHING else was included with the kit.

You can have it built to any dimensions.
this kit was built to mirror the placement of existing columns on the home directly across from the pergola (see pics).

so is it a track that they slide on. its a great alternative versus those ugly awnings attatched to the house. i usually add lattice to my pergolas for filtering light, but if the budget allows i would love to install one of them.

I am not impressed. I looked into their products a year and a half ago. I just feel they look cheap. Thats all.
A pergola made out of natural material will always be my choice. Yes it will require maintenance. But so what?!?!?! If the client can afford to hire you to do that job, they can afford some painting/staining.
Just my 2 cents. I think they are over priced too.

DVS on another note- i assume a grill is going into that opening. Why didn't you through the drain under the grill and have all the water drain out that way?

This is a pergola that i did recently. I used lattice to block wind and light, but the customer asked about a way to cover the roof of the pergola. I found this product online but don't know anything about it. Has anyone seen it or used it. I am not that fond of awnings, but this is in a retirement community and those awnings are everywhere. I guess it is the camper in all of them.

Their track system is part of the beams. It has to be on something that does not warp, shrink, or swell....otherwise they won't work. I have never seen any type of awning systems have tracks on beams that are subject to the aforementioned. Even sail boat's sails...are on metal!
Theres a million pergola companies to choose from, in terms of wood, vinyl, etc. It's up to the homeowner to choose the style they desire.
The drain? Matt, I'm a methodical person. The drain is, where it is, for many reasons :)
I would not say this Shade Tree kit is cheap quality. Although, sure, it may be over priced. All aluminum headers and beams that one could do pull ups on, are pretty snazzy.
Pergolas serve no purpose. Other than for people with a lotta money to spend! But the Shde Tree system is a nice alternative for those that want to block sun, and or create a shaded entertainment area. They're very popular at retirement homes and adult daycare facilities.
This march or April, the whole area will be lit up. Subtle lighting shining down each pergola column, a subtle light illuminating the stone work, maybe lighting on the statues. The lighting is really gonna WOW people. They even have a sweet Bose audio system out there!

I wouldn't say they are worthless. My customer above wanted something to hang a swing from and something that would block the afternoon sun from coming in thier sliding glass doors as it is doing in the above pics. Pergolas are great additions to your portfolio and people love them. They provide some shade with out taking away all off your direct sunlight. If done corectly with ceiling fans and lighting, they can really make a great place to sit on a hot summer night. Not to mention that I made some pritty good money off of this one and built it in two days.

I prefer a lattice and a flowering climbing vine of some kind (wisteria, clematis, hydrangea, climbing rose, etc) Just my personal choice.
I think any product is going to fit the need of someone somewhere and it's our job to offer a whole spectrum of choices to a consumer. This product seems like a practical and inexpensive alternative to enhance an outdoor living space. Maybe someone will come out with a shade system like that that is not proprietary to their product.

I had a Shadetree stand alone pergola in my pool patio install last spring until the design and budget got shot to hell.
I think they make a good product just try to take advantage of preseason sales.

I'm actually in the process of deciding between backyard america and shadetree. The person wants an awning and the shadetree looks like it might be the way to go, personally I think the backyardamerica vinyl pergolas are a little nicer looking AND their prices are very reasonable.

Just stumbled across this thread... I had no interest in Shade Tree stuff till I saw their display at the Providence Home and Garden Show. Now, I'm actually designing their shade system into a master plan I'm doing. The track systems come in three widths, so you can do a completely custom pergola, you just need to space the beams properly. I wouldn't mount the tracks on p/t 2x material, but this is a big space- these babies are going on cedar 4x12 beams, secured with Simpson's APG fasteners on top of stone columns. Like anything else, now I just have to hope the homeowner spends the money...
