Silly question. I'm doing a small veneer job on a newly built garage and specifically the entrance to the loft area. The builder has the area covered in a tyvek in preparation for siding. We are going to veneer the area instead. Is it okay to just put my 30# felt over the Tyvek and then hang my lath? Any other precautions to be aware of? I've never done veneer work on new construction.

Thanks!

BTW - It's lick 'n stick veneer we are installing.

No problem. Thats what most guys do that I've seen. As long as u adhere your paper well there should be no sliding

Adam,
What we do instead of lath is use durock & scratch coat over it. I admit lath is old school but in my opinion durock is the way to go & it saves time. you can put it right over the tyvek. BTW that is a nice install, no scaffolding. Good luck with it.

We've done it both ways as well, and don't even use felt as the tyvek pretty much takes the place of the felt. The durock is much faster, and we don't even scratch over the durock besides filling seams, which is a double savings.

What thickness durock do you guys use? Do you just hang it will galvanized screws?

I like 5/8" & I do use galvanized screws. I also tape the seems with cement board mesh tape before I scratch coat.

Adam, what stone are you using. the manufacture sometimes may void a warranty if you install it other than how they recommend. to be safe... use lath
