Hey all- Thanks so much for allowing me to join the forum. I am at the tail end of the design phase for a rowhouse addition in Washington, DC. The plans call for the construction of a modest 100 sq. ft. deck. About 75 sq. ft. will be covered by a pergola. The architect has called for an ceiling fan to be installed.

Obviously there are plenty of UL wet location listed fans available, that's not a problem. I've installed plenty of fans before too, indoors and out, but never in an open space like this. What I cannot figure out is what sort of electrical box to use and as such, how to attach the fan the to pergola rafter.

Am I missing something? Are there wet location listed fan boxes? I haven't found any, if there are and my electrician is equally stumped.

What do you guys do?

Thanks!

I would just frame out a box between the rafters. Hopefully your rafters are close enough to do this. Your electrician should be knowledgeable enough to install it once its hung

What I did on mine was screw a 2 x 6 perpindicular to the rafters to support a normal junction box. Mounted the junction box to the 2 x 6 and mounted the fan to the junction box like you would inside you home. The fan junction box cover matches up nicely with the edge of the 2 x 6.

I ran the romex down the side of one of my rafters then coverd it with a piece of 3/4" outside corner molding. Blended in with the cedar on my pergola.
