I have a client who is adament about having a outdoor fireplace with a pizza oven. Does anyone have any ideas how to incorporate them both into one structure?

You could build it as a two-chamber oven- the heating fire is below the pizza oven and the convection currents carry the air up into the pizza oven. There's a decent section drawing in "Build Your Own Earth Oven" by Kiko Denzer.

I think you will lose the beauty of the fireplace. Now they can still be separate yet built into one structure. I know nothing about combining them together.

I know nothing about pizza ovens. How does it work? Is there a fire in the back and you cook in the front?

Lets say you are done cooking your food. Can you keep a fire in it and sit around it for warmth?

for the pizza oven the fire is in the same chamber as the pizza. the wood is allowed to burn down some and pushed to the side, and then the pizza is slid in.
I cant imagine sitting next to it for warmth or enjoyment.

But you could keep burning wood in it after cooking right?

yes. kinda like a chim-in-ne-a. I had know idea how to spell that and not sound like chimney. but you know what Im saying right? I think pizza ovens are not very tall inside though. I have never built one but some I have seen, even kits, didnt look like it would be a great fireplace

Heres something interesting that you could probably build bigger and incorporate a fireplade next to it making a double chimney.

That's exactly what I would like to build if possible. Fireplace on the bottom. Pizza oven on top.

cool site. I cant believe that thing is 20k on sale for 13k. what a rip. It would be cool if you modified that thing. use firebrick below and add a flu in the back of the fire box. right now you can only store wood in the bottom. insulate above the box to protect the oven from burning out. that unit looks like something unilock would have. unilock has some really neat fireplaces you can modify.

Matt, you may like to look at a traditional brick oven design and use this concept when designing a fireplace/pizza oven. There are brick ovens that house the fire on the same level as the pizzas are cooked and there are designs that allow a lower fire chamber.
Just learning a bit about what elements are involved in producing a good pizza may be a good method of thinking when designing the oven. Check this link out: http://www.traditionaloven.com/

Since this got brought back up, just thought I'd mention that this weekend I met a guy in VA who's making the pizza oven masonry inserts. Talking to a stone vendor, this guy's going to be half what Cambridge sells their inserts for, and for a good product. I'm going to head out there to kick his tires, shoot some video, and see what I think. I'll let you guys know when I do.
