corten steel retaining wall

Hi everyone

I want to design a retaining wall and use corten steel. I am sure if anyone has worked with metal and has any idea how I would anchor the wall to the ground and how to make some like this work? I was thinking the wall would not exceed 30".

I have 3 ideas how I would approach this if I didn’t feel engineering plans were necessary:

1. If 30” is exposed, than I would sink 30” of the steel right into my concrete footing. Of course with the price of steel and the ability to purchase this stuff by size, I don’t know what this does to the budget. Lots of drainage behind the wall of course.
2. It is possible to weld hitching rings to the back of the plates and cable off to a buried support? Like how dead-men would act for a wooden tie wall?
3. Build a CMU wall and face it with the metal. Leave a few inches at the top that are exposed to retain the look of just steel.

I would think that for a job like the ones in your photos, this stuff is all welded together on site. Basically all of the walls are attached and you just fill the ‘boxes’ with soil and drain stone?

That is very different and I have never seen anything like it before...I like the idea of using some dead men system...Seems like at least 2' of drainage gravel would be appropriate behind the wall

I agree... very modern and unique. I love the rust patina finish. I hope you get the chance to use that Marc. I wouldnt put it next to any patio or walkway though, that stuff will stain like no other!

I was thinking that I could put some metal fence posts in the ground and have the metal worker weld it the sheet coreten steel. Again i was thinking this would be cool as a raised planting bed. Maybe even for a vegetable garden. I will call a few iron shops that do railings and see I can get some help.

If you happen to find any pricing on the cor-ten during your travels, please share! I'm dying to know the cost of that stuff...

This was kind of the idea of how I might want to use the Coreten.

Right, so if they are all welded boxes then you just fill them with soils and add drainage. Just have the side that is not above grade buried.
