View Full Version : Screed
Does everybody just use pipe and a 2x4 to screed or is there a better alternative?

1x4's cut to various lengths. Doesn't cost but a few dollars and can cut in a minute for tight areas.

We use either mag. screeds or we have sand pulls in 2', 4', 6', 8'

I use aluminum 1x3 stock in various lengths, a come along, and a 3' landscape rake. I hope to have some sand pulls made up this winter.

Chris, you gonna get back to me on those sand pulls????

I'm lookin' into it as we type!

Let me expand this question.....Does everybody screed for pavers or do you use another method. I just read something, not that long ago about people not screeding at all. I have always screeded for the sand, but am curious about a faster method.

screeding is pretty fast

Always screed! It's the sand that creates the interlock.
Chris
For sand we use 1" o.d. pipe for rails and a aluminum screed board. Is anyone screeding their top lift of modified? I am looking for a faster way to get the base done.

Base is easy if there's one person spreading, depending on the size of the job, I would rather spread if myself than have someone else in the way think they were helping. How can there be a quicker method than screeding? Although, if you saw "paradise" patio on the diy network, and I stress "paradise", you could just throw some sand down and lay pavers. I plan on writing them a letter. They built a retaining wall that will retain the patio for about a week,on top soil with no base. They did get it done in 48 hours though good job guys.
I hate the DIY shows and all the shows on that network. They are clearly incorrect and any time that I work people think that is the way to do it and the way I do it is wrong. That makes me so angry.
We use 1" metal piping to screed our base sand. We then use 2x4's which we've planed to be level. Of course I find my workers using new levels all the time instead of the leveled boards.

I watched a crew spread stone dust(screenings) for a large pool deck with nothing but a level. I haven't been back to see the finished product but I can't imagine that working well.

lol The guys I work with use the levels constantly to screed. The managers aren't exactly thrilled. lol

6' level makes a great screed !! ;) I bought the accuscreed system to screed modified but have yet to use it. Good old string lines are hard to kick.

Accuscreed is priceless in my book. I invested in that last year and the guys love it. I also went or our local tubing supplier and picked up some aluminum angle iron cut to different lengths. Grab some bolts and wing nuts and they interchange on broom handles or you can but tubing for that as well. It's a couple of bucks, but still cheaper than buying it already made. Plus you can customize it as needed. My guys found a nifty way to mount a level on the top of them as a visual guide.

Pap - I purchased Accuscreed but haven't used it. How do YOU use it ? Do you bang 1" conduit in ground then place yoks on that or do use use a diff. method ?

I have an accuscreed question also. are you using it to screed your base or your setting sand? i don't see where it would be helpful with the sand since you don't want anymore than 1.5" of sand and typically you just lay your pipe directly on the compacted base. If you are using it for the screeding of base, how you handle the changes in levels due to compacting in lifts. maybe i just don't understand how this product works in our industry, but would love to find something that works equally or better than laying my pipe on the base.

I would use it to screed base.

Yes, we use it for base leveling. Use the cheap tubing cut to lengths based on your base depth, put the yoke in and set grades with the transit/level. Of course your gonna have to do lifts, but after your final grade pop the yokes out and we just leave the tube in the ground. Fill it in and screed your sand.
Sure as hell beats using nail stakes and rechecking grade everyday.

WHat cheap tubing ? I was just going to bang in 1/2" metal electrical conduit, but was concerned with frost heaving them up.

Which kit did you guys purchase? Are the yoke and nuts durable or do you find they break often?

Do the edges of the yoke stick up higher than the 1" OD pipes we tend to use for sand screeding? I see on the site, they recommend using 1 5/8" OD. Just wondering how the system would work when trying to two separate lengths of pipe in succession. How does it work when using it for base screeding? Does the nut give you enough room to raise the yoke 2-4" to re-adjust for lifts?

Actually we do screed our base on a large surface area, takes only a few minutes to set the pipes to grade - 1/2" and spread the gravel, then we do a fast screed with 2"x 4" or like and then lift the pipes and compact. When the sand goes down it goes down even and your good to go.
