how come you used rubber? you might want to use larger decorative stone those could move with all that water you showed in the first pics.

i think its gonna take a bigger pipe than that to control all that water? Is the plan to catch it all? or catch 50% of it?

MuirView Design

I used rubber because I wanted a completed impervious material...especially between the boxes. We don't want to give the water a chance to erode down and around the boxes. We're hoping to catch about 80% of that water in the boxes. Everything else should ride down the swale. Rubber was an extreme and more expensive option, but he wanted to go the extra mile given the amount of water we are dealing with. I also have small boulders to act as buffers across several spots in the swale, so that if the smaller stone does try and wash, it will get hung up and back up against the boulders. It will make more sense when we get it all finished up today.

That's a 10" (at least) hard drain installed w/ a trench/french style drain below a dry river bed. That thing should be able to handle quite alot of run off.

was all that water coming off the hill? from the one house or are they at the bottom of a series of houses

I figured thats what you were doing just wanted to hear it. I read one time the flow rate of a couple inches of water and how much it could move, it was incredible.
Side note:
you have amish around you also?
I live in Ohio's largest community.
Do you have trouble landing jobs from the amish, say over an amish landscaping company?

Mike,

The house is at the bottom of a small mountain and there are about 30 houses above him. There is a lot of water that builds up in a wetland area on the other side of the neighbors and then comes rushing through the neighbor's yard and converges with the water that is coming straight down the easement. We placed the two 24" catch basins directly below the the convergence point and used the boulders as a "backboard" to direct the converging water into the boxes. So far, it seems to be doing as planned.

Bruce,

I'm hoping that by cutting down the velocity of the water, we can stop the stones from washing. I was trying to convince him to just go with rip rap down the whole swale, but he wanted to keep the smooth pearl look. Personally, I'm not too fond of that stone, but it is what it is. My guys are there now finishing up with the sod and some more stone and we're going to call it good.

Yes, there are lots of Amish in this area. We've got horse and buggy parking at the wal-mart down the road. Lots of Mennonite out here too. They do a lot more construction work than landscaping, so i'm not really competing with them.....YET. I'll try and snap some pics when it's done.

Talk about kid heaven! Any kids are gonna be pissed that you fixed that lol.
That is some serious water, I've never come across any problems like that, but I'm relatively new to the game so that doesn't surprise me. Those are some cool pics though. Definately posts some pics when you are done. I like how you thought about the aesthetics as well as the solution. A lot of guys would have just fixed it and left it looking blah, while it may not be everyones taste I think it looks pretty good for what you have to work with.
Nice work Adam

not every day you see horse and buggy parking at walmart!
I probably compete with 7-8 in a 15mile radius.
Been doing this for 8yrs and only worked for 3 amish( they were friends)
the larger boulders should help alot, cant wait to see final pics

Nice,That will move some water now.
Is that light column your problem also?

MuirView Design
04-07-2009, 10:43 PM
No...light column was not built by me. The whole patio is a mess. I'll take pics of it tomorrow. It's holding water in about 20 places and the wall has a wave through the whole thing. I'm sure I'll get the call to repair in a year or two.

Thought I would post a picture of a swale I did a few years back. Still in great shape no rocks ever move. Not sure it gets the flow Adam's job has. I used large river jack gravel maybe 5-8" can't remember.

I just got this awesome testimonial emailed to me today from the client we did this drainage work for. It was an unsolicited and unexpected testimonial, which is always nice. Been months of some heavy rain, and not a single stone has moved. -

"I had the pleasure of working with Muirview Landscaping earlier this summer and
could not be more thrilled with experience or the outcome of the project.

I was experiencing a significant water drainage issue on my property due to an
improperly graded easement. I'd previously contracted with two separate
landscape companies to fix the problem, but both failed to do so. Adam took a
very consultative approach to my situation, whereby he really took time to
understand the issue and even came out to my property in a torrential storm to
view the issue first hand, before making a formal recommendation on how to solve
the issue.

Not only was Adam/Muirview able to resolve my problem, but the finished product
was an esthetically pleasing hardscape that continually receives rave reviews
from my neighbors.

I would highly recommend Muirview Landscape and Design to anyone seeking to
beautify their property, as you will be delighted by the outcome and the
professional manner in which he conducts business from beginning to end. It has
been months since the project was complete and Adam still follows up with me to
ensure my satisfaction, which is a rarity in today's world.

Much thanks and appreciation to Adam and the Muirview crew!

That is why we are in business. It is jobs like that that build reputations. You don't think the Sellers are telling everyone about how professional and courtious you are. You should be proud Adam.

Outstanding. Put that letter in your portfolio and on your web site. That is something special. Also when you are at a client with a larger project offer to take them to that project. Make sure the homeowner is aware you are coming. They will come out a rave over your work and you will get 99% of the jobs after that.
