I have been subbing out my landscape lighting installation since day one. I normally tell the guy what fixtures I want where and he does it. Due to the economy I am trying to pull as much work in house as possible. Are their any sites you guys can recommened where I can spend some time reading about lighting?

www.castlighting.com is a good one. You can probably go to any manufacturers site and pull some quality info. Try Kichlers site, hadco, vista, and unique

Matt,

Contact Joe Digiovanni at Unique Lighting. They have a resource called The Landscape Lighting Manual. He sent it to me last year at no cost.
His email is joey.digiovanni@uniquelighting.com phone 760.291.2419.
It gives you all of the basics. As Chris mentioned above Cast Lighting should also be considered. I had taken one of their calssed afew years ago at MAHTS.

Good Luck.

Matt, just keep in mind that here in NJ we're not allowed to install lighting without an electrician's license. I know, everyone does it, but you could get fined if someone decides to turn you in. With work being so slow I have a feeling that suddenly electricians will want to install low voltage.

Is it hard to get electricians liscense in NJ?
Cause lighting is definitely one of the easiest ways to make money.
Find a supplier,
they are doing classes like crazy right now.
My supplier has like 7 classes coming up.

Matt, the class at Rutgers is taught by the owner of Cast and is definitely worthwhile. You can also contact Steve Parrot for the their installation manual.

The installation of landscape lighting is not difficult, once you learn the procedures and formulas, but good lighting design is tough to learn in a classroom. Bad lighting design can ruin the look of a quality project at night. The Unique book is a good resource and the "Landscape Lighting Book", by Janet Moyer is considered the best textbook for landscape lighting design. As with most of the landscape projects, good design followed by quality installation results in beautiful, sustainable landscapes.

Be aware that most of the seminars offered at your local suppliers will be sales seminars with enough knowledge to able you to purchase product and get yourself into trouble.
