Joe, how did you ensure proper compaction on that pedestal?

I did it in 4" lifts from on top of the existing concrete base. I have a plate compactor that I use that has a cf of 4500. I like to use it on applications like that and stairs, etc.

You used that inside that pedestal?

Yes I did. The pedestal diameter is 5'x5' so there is enough room. I also used one of those ground pounders that paveteck sells for the corners. Those are nice for getting into tight places like under doorways and on the backside of block.

A layer or two of geo-grid would help significantly also. It would prevent any possible future separation of brick and in turn would help prevent any settling of materials. I like to use it now on any step application requiring more than 2 levels.

Zedo,
I do have geogrid under the whole project on top of the subgrade. What you are saying is to put a couple of layers in lets say a 5 step project. Thanks for the tip.

Cg is right in this application it I would normally install Grid at 1.5' and 3'. Keeping the fill material from going to it's angle of repose is a true concern on most retaining situations over 2'.

Your right Joey, in your application I would of used 2 layers of geo-grid. One layer of geo-tex at the sub base and then the geo-grid approx. 1/3 and 2/3 of the way up. Cheap insurance for an otherwise quite expensive repair job should the blocks pull apart.

why would you install geogrid on top of your subgrade? You should use a geotextile as a soil separator. Geogrid is used in retaining applications.

What Chris is saying Joey is that geo-GRID is not required nor for that matter is anything required at the top of the base. We all know that geo TEXTILE is used at the sub grade level and for raised applications such as the one you've shown or boxed in steps 3 layers and higher we should use geo-GRID.
