What is the typical waterfall construction on these applications. I'm looking at doing my first waterfall for a pool and I'm wondering if I should make my falls out of a waterfall box or build my own with block and liner?

what type of pool construction are you using?

Mark, the pool is gunite. I'm still not sure about any other specs of the build. I'm researching this since it's my first job like this and making sure I'm capable of doing it. For the most part it will be a 2ft boulder wall on edge with a sheet type fall for them to sit under and pour on thier head and shoulders.

why don't you just form up the falls out of the gunite....here's the one we did at bedrock for the spa. It has an upper pool with a main set of falls and a smaller set of falls on the right

Yes, although the exterior grade was brought up substantially and in some instances larger boulders were set against the exterior gunite walls. But, everything on top of the gunite beam and everything on the interior was mortared in place. This has 2 falls. The smallest set which is in the foreground of the pic has some stone which is just loosely set in the pools of it. So, it was really a combination of function whether or not it was mortared or not. We also, custom made tile for it out of bluestone river rock skippers which were epoxyed in place and then grouted with an epoxy grout.

I'm not familiar with gunite. I know what it is basically, but I've never worked with it in any way. Another thing is the pool builder doesn't want mortared joints in this boulder/falls application.:noidea:

Looking at your work. My budget is probably what you have in just a few boulders in that picture. lol!

No mortar joints in this application...atleast that are seen. The only visible joint is in the tile that is the epoxy grout
Good luck to you...let us know what route you go!

Mark what epoxy grout are you using for that appication? The only epoxy grout I'm familiar with is Latticretes Spectra lock, mainly used in tile flooring. I've been searching for an epoxy grout to use in flagstone joints that won't kill the budgets. Spectra lock is about $1 per sqft when used in a 3/8 tile joint.

That is what we used in this application. We have used it in tile and bluestone apps as well. You're right it's incredibly expensive.

Make sure that the pool company supplies the water line. If you are on a very tight budget berm the waterfalls with compacted soil use a rubber pond liner. and use natural stone. Moss rock boulder are best but most stone will work.
