For some of you this would be a cake walk....my first set of stairs, first circle kit, first wired pillars and never, ever tackled a grade like this. I also did about 75% it alone....Not perfect by any means but man did I learn a lot and a great deal of grinder work:)

Larry,

Awesome job! In spite of the headache with the block, it really turned out nice. Do you have any plantings going in?

Thanks Adam. We will be planting it all in the spring. Not looking forward to it though. The most god awful soil I ever worked in.

Was the lower patio and wall completed before this project?

nice job Larry! Turned out real nice. It's always a challenge working on grades like that. Did you have any issues with material staging?

Yes, but not by me. You can't see from the pics but the patio has ruts in it.

The material staging wasn't too bad. My supplier was able to get the pallets along side the wall area pretty well. The excavation was rough. Soil was like concrete .

larry, is that black pipe going under your hardscaping? If so, do you have any worries about crushing?

LOL! Getting stone to your excavation with the material lined up next to it. Were you able to use a machine or did you do it by hand

Sorry. Rented a Kubota TLB . It worked nice on the hill and saved a lot of man power. In some spots we had to shovel from the bucket though. A great deal of hand compaction on the steps, that sucked.

It's hard to tell from the pics but the pipe is pretty deep and we secured it next to the back of the stair we wrapped it in fabric and 3/4 inch clean and hand compacted very carefully and then filled with blend and compacted. We water tested it several times to be safe. It runs behind the top stairs and only pavers are above it so worst case scenario we would only have to move pavers to get to the base over it.
Any suggestions for future reference. I thought I read a thread here that suggested black pipe. Interested in feedback.Thanks...

Is the black pipe likely to crush? I have seen PVC even sched 40 crack, is that a concern as well?

Hi,
For a first job like this you did excellent! You seem to have an attention to detail that will set you apart from your competition. A lot of people on this forum have good vision like this also. I bet this took you a lot longer than you thought. Now that you took on the challenge & won the next one will be a lot more fun.
