Anybody install a water application retaining wall? If so, what extra prep did you do?

clean 57's as your leveling pad so fines don't wash out, wrap the entire pad in geo, bury about 30-50% of the wall, longer grid pulls, erosion stone at the front of the wall for scour protection.... I'm probably forgetting something.
We have one still to do this year. This late in the season, I'm not particularly looking forward to it. very tight site. I don't know where everything is gonna go :noidea:

I'll do my best.... no promises though!
I think I documented one pretty good last year, but I'll try. At least I already have b4's, thanks to the customer.

Hey, on any given week, right.
I've thought all along that nobody would ever repeat the Dolphins undefeated season.... until this year starting rolling along. tonite, I'm back to my original thinking.
BTW, no humble pie will be served until at least the end of January. 15-1, 14-2, 13-3 regular season record doesn't mean they won't win the SB.

Did you ever look at the records of the teams the 72 Dolphins beat?? Not impressive at all. Only one team finished with a record above .500.

Isn't there something about a 100 year flood and the distance clean stone needs to go back?
GreenMonster
11-26-2007, 12:12 AM
I didn't realize that until just recently. I just think there are too many talented teams out there for anyone to run the table.

I remember reading that if a wall falls within the 100 year flood plane, it needs to be treated as a water application.

I don't know if it's related to the 100 year flood deal, but the plans from the wall we did last year called for 18" of drain field.
I do know we've had 100 year floods two years in a row now, so hopefully there won't be another one for a while.

Mark,
That kid in the pictures of that link sure looks thrilled to be there. I'd like to see some pictures of the process too as well if possible, especially on the base compacted and being wrapped in the geotextile. Tanks.

Well, the link to the b4's is what we have. Our excavator sub showed up before us the other day and had half the old wall torn out.
He has removed the wall, and we shuttled it up the hill to the driveway where he will load it into his tri-axle and haul off. he's also doing the excavation for us as well. At this point, it's mostly done. What's left is to cut the trench out for the footer and buried block. We're gonna let the snow come in on Sun/Mon, and then we'll clean it out, and excavate the trench.

I used the root grapple to haul up the concrete pieces. Worked pretty slick.
Coming down the hill though, you feel like a pinball bouncing around the trees:roll:
Here's a pic also of the lake. The water is down about 6-8'

2 crews this year = 2 skids. We have both. SR-80 we picked up this spring.

we had about 8" of snow Sunday/Monday.
We're going back to the job site tomorrow to clean the snow out of the way, and continue with excavation.
We'll see if that ASV is all is cracked up to be in the snow.

Nonetheless, we shall persevere.
After the large excavator finished the cut for the backfill/grid, we brought the mini down onto the beach and excavated the trench. We'll be burying 3 courses of 8" block, in addition to the 6" footer.
Pretty easy soils to work with. There is are stairs going in the center of the wall. Strangely, on one side, its very course gravel, with larger rock toward the end of the wall, and almost like processed gravel closest to the stairs. On the other side of the stairs it's like sugar sand. The bench cut won't hold at all.

very tight and difficult site. The block is in the neighbors driveway, and we can't even bring the hardscape trailer here. So, we're working old school out of the back of the truck -- which sux.
Here's a pic from the seat of skid going up the hill to where our agg and block is staged, and then a pic coming down. I was able to successfully back down the hill twice today with full pallets. I fully expect to lose a pallet before this job is done.

Green monster- It looks like you have better dirt then what i get to work with in NJ. I am building walls now. And do to the wet fall i can not get the dirt to compact in the reinforced zone. I ended up just getting a couple extra trucks of quarry process and using that.

Sure looks cold outside. Will the root systems on those trees damage the wall over time? Looks like the base material you guys use out east has more 57's in it than ours 411 does.

yeah, it's been cold. Today wasn't bad. Probably around 35.
Those trees are pretty mature. I doubt there is much root growth left in them. Homeowner very much wanted to keep them. I warned them that the construction effort would cause a fair amount of trauma -- they were willing to take the risk. I hope they live... they've been such a major PITA to work around, they might as well live at this point.

Base course is in. Again, first three courses will be buried below grade. Everything below grade will be backfilled with on-site soils. Then drains venting out from behind 4th course.
Notice all the extra fabric at the front of the wall -- that's in order to completely wrap the 57 base.

well, sorry guys, just like I figured, I didn't really get pictures until we were done.
In my defense, I tried a couple times, but my batteries were always dead. This new camera I have eats batteries.
Anyway, 3 buired courses, separation fabric behind the drain field, drain field is 18" deep, 3 pulls of grid at courses 2, 4, and 7. first two pulls are 4', last pull is 5.5'. drainage behind 4th course, vented every 40'
One of the newest members here, Terraventure, helped us finish up here.
In the spring, we'll be back for final clean-up and seeding and install more erosion stone in front of the wall.

Water will be somewhere around 2 courses down from the top. you can see the waterline on the adjacent wall.

any chance water will undermine those beautiful granite steps with that itty-bitty gap near the top.

Got you beat, last year I was unloading 3x4 concrete slabs with my Load Handler, got down to the last two and the pile was so large there was no more room to dump, so I let go of the handle and leaned forward to make room and just then some on the bottom of the pile broke and made room on there own, so the remaining two that were hung up now slid down, well this spun the steel handle of the load handler around and wailed it just above my left temple-- bam! knocked my azz right onto the ground.
Okay so besides feeling like an idiot, the story gets better, the next day I'm hand tamping in with the deadblow the remaining high spots of the walk and smash the pad of my left pointing finger almost off. Ouch!, pop some Motrin tape it up and finish work (CSI type blood spatter on my shirt) go home and later that night get a Tetnis shot and 3 stitches. (without any Lidocane mind you because I hate those more than the stitches).
SO THE NEXT day (if your still awake and following this OT story, LOL) I get a 103* fever, mild paralysis, uncontrolled muscle spasms, hyper ventilate and because of the high fever cooking my brain say things like a stupid drunk. 10 hours later in the ED after a chest x-ray (pnumonia), blood work (viruses), MRI (blood in the brain aka the Load Handler), urine test (drugs) and finally a spinal-tap (Bacterial Meningitus) they determine that the only thing it could be since everything came in negative is Viral Menengitus (not contagus) and I was out of work for 2 weeks with no energy.
.........uugh.

yeah, they just inherited the place, so they're putting a few bucks into it.
the stairs should be fine. they're split on the sides, so it looks like a gap, but they are up tight against block somewhere. It's all 3/4" stone behind and under the stairs.
