Nice work Larry! Procedurally, looks like you've got all the bases covered. I wonder if a better option would've been to do larger landings with the series of steps closer together. It's hard to tell, but the landings all seem to be different widths.

The landings are 2 at 2' and 2 at 3' and then 2 at 2' and 2 at 3'.... I agree with you but HO didn't.He wanted the landings stretched out like that so I thought 2/3/2/3 would work. First time doing steps like this so I was struggling a bit with the geometry...

LOL on the geometry

I would've had to be firm with the homeowner as the way the steps are laid out is awkward and potentially dangerous. I do understand, sometimes you just do what the customer says though. What are the codes for railings in your area?

Do you think the 2/3 2/3 is not advisable. I have never done a project like this before. Any feedback is appreciated..... I hope I didn't screw up too bad:scared:

I dont know about dangerous, one thing i would have done was had them a consistent run, either all 2' or all 3'. Only thing you may have an issue with is if someone is not paying attention they may loose sight of the fact that they need to take one more step before stepping up.

Sorry Larry. With the legal troubles you're going through, I should be more mindful of how I word things. I just think steps are about logical intervals. Landings should be landing and steps should be steps. When people walk down steps, it's usually about habitual repetition. That why it can be dangerous to throw a 5 inch step in with all 7.5" steps.

I think you'll be okay Larry. I would say the layout is less on the dangerous side, and more on the awkward side.

BTW - What the heck is a bustle in a hedgerow?

Lyrics from stairway to heaven "If there's a bustle in hedgerow don't be alarmed now"
remember Wtakins Glen and All that ...I'm a 70's rocker... Thanks for the feedback, Colonial too. The next time I do steps I hope you don't mind if I ask you a few Stupid (LOL) questions.

No such things as stupid questions just dumb answers:)

Just remember when you plan/build this stuff what would you feell comfortable having an older relative walk up and down. As stupid as it sounds if you take that thought into consideration it eliminates hazards.

ClearValley,
Are those cmu's as supports under your steps? And if so how are you preventing them from shifting around because they dont interlock? Are they mortared together?

They are EP Henry Filler Block they are glued, geo-grided and buried in 6 inches of base.

Ok a stupid question- How do you move your tamp from step to step? How do you make sure you get good compaction in the corners?

ClearValley

Alot of hand tamping....my deltoids are firing a way .....when possible we bring the plate in from behind as we work up but mostly a good 10 X 10 tamper...please if I'm missing something obvious on the tamping let me know.
