I'm putting in (at least trying but mother nature has decided to dump 6" of rain on us in the last week) a SMALL patio for one of my customers, anyway part of the design was to include a bench to sit on. The design had no back or arms and the customer informed me that her husband would require these so they were added after the design.
Wood working is a hobby for me so no labor was charged to the customer, the cost of materials was though. Now if it will ever stop raining I can get to the patio part.

Nice work, is the 1x cedar used for the seat recessed?

yes, I'm having outdoor cushin's sewed up as I type. They will stick up about 3/4" and be about flat when sat on.--Good eye.

Doesn't matter if its a hobby or not, still charge for labor. I could say hardscaping is a hobby and just charge material. :loco:
Looks good though!!

If I charged for labor on the bench my little patio project would start to have a MRUSK price tag :pound:
seriously, I didn't keep track but I put at least 30 hours into the bench. Its hard to tell though because it would be an hour here a couple there. I really just wanted it for my portfolio and because it was a nice change of pace, I got to buy a biscuit joiner and put a 30' tarp up over my driveway:pound:.

I love redwood, but it is widely unavailable (and expensive) around here. I only know of a few suppliers that carry and it and most deminsions have to be ordered.
Looks good. How long were those lag bolts for the back support?

Awesome job on the benches! You'll really be leaving a piece of yourself behind on that job. Great work!

There are six 10"-3/8ths lags holding the back supports to the bench and the ones on the front are 4 1/2" and go into the first black pipe, then the mitered corners of the 2x6's are gorilla glued and biscuit jointed.
as to availability, I too thought the stuff was all special order but there is a lumber yard just up the street from my house that stocks it, the 4x4 construction grade redwood was $4.62 LFT, the 4x12 was $14 LFT, the 2x6 was $3.47 LFT and the red cedar 5/4" deck boards were $2.46 LFT.
Thanks for the nice comments guys, that was my first major piece of furniture and in hindsite I would have done some things differently, but when you see it sitting on the patio the stiffness of the design and wood selection will make sense.
